Unlike older keys, modern car keys have specific chips in them that are unique to each vehicle. This helps to prevent thieves from simply taking the key and then starting the car.

The keys can be purchased from an auto dealer or copied in the locksmith's shop. The process of the manufacturer varies in that it involves turning the ignition key to the "on" position without activating the vehicle, and then removing the key within a specified time period.

Transponder Codes

The signal is referred to as a SQUAWK code and forms the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send an exact message to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable to speak on the radio. They are essential for safe flying.

Each aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen. Transponders can be configured to respond in a variety of ways when questioned. Mode A only transmits the code, while mode C also provides altitude information. Mode S transponders provide more detailed information like callsigns and positions. This can be helpful in airspace that is crowded.

Most aircraft have a tiny, beige box under the seat of the pilot. The transponder is a small beige box that is used to transmit the SQUAWK code every time the air traffic control activates the aircraft. The transponder is set to be in the 'ON' position, ALT position or SBY (standby) position.

PIN Codes

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually between four and six digits) that are used to access the device or system. For instance, a smart phone comes with a PIN code that is set by the user when they first buy the device. The user must enter this code each time they wish to use it. PIN codes are also commonly used to safeguard ATM or transactions at POS,[1] secure access control (doors, computers, cars),[2] computer systems,[3and internet transactions.

Even though a longer PIN might seem more secure than a shorter one, it is possible to hack or guess even a four-digit PIN. To ensure security it is recommended that PINs are at least 6 digits in length and contain both numbers and letters. PIN codes are often required by some OEMs to allow aftermarket key programmers as a security measure to ensure that they are not misused by unauthorised people to harvest data from the modules.

The tenth and eleventh numbers indicate the year of the vehicle's manufacture. The eleventh digit is used to indicate the assembly plant that manufactured the vehicle. Additionally the tenth through seventeenth numbers may include additional information, such as features or options that are fitted in the vehicle.

The VIN code is a serial number that has six digits that identify the vehicle or truck. The last digit of the VIN code is also the check-digit. The other numbers have been converted into numbers. The first digit is assigned an 8 and each subsequent digit grows in value by one until the seventh digit is nine, which then becomes two. Then the entire VIN will be converted back to its original format by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is equal to the check digit then the VIN is valid.
